Discover something different from local makers and artists

Jo Sheppard

Working mostly in oils, I produce contemporary textured paintings inspired by the commonplace, discarded and neglected. I hunt for man-made surfaces (such as buildings) which have been finely tuned by nature to create perfect abstract works of art. Whilst patterns and patina in eroded surfaces can harbour a multitude of colours, forms and textures which enrich simple scenes, they often pass unnoticed. Through using a multi-layered combination of painting techniques and colour variations, I aim to take such glimpsed views and preserve their beauty forever.
I also hold an interest in the organic and architectural form of the fossil- this reinforces my interest in erosion and decay, with its subsequent incidental beauty. Although this subject matter perhaps seems very different from my focus on architectural surfaces, there are significant parallels such as decay, complicated structural qualities, patina, symmetry, and texture.

Within both areas of study I make certain aesthetic judgments by removing the superfluous, and focusing on what is important at the time, often to the point of abstraction. By doing this I hope to heighten the onlooker’s appreciation of the intricacies and beauty of the surface in question.

Prices of range from £25 to £1100- commissions welcome.

I am a member of Loughborough based art group ArtSpace.
