Discover something different from local makers and artists

Fiona Meagher

The ceramic objects I make sit on the boundaries between the mass produced and the handmade, craft and fine art. I have built an archive of things. I locate objects of interest, collect them, study them and carry out experiments on them. I place them in my hidden archive and this acts as a muse for my making.

Collecting is central to my process. Other interests are historical and mundane ceramics, ornaments, lost objects, museum culture, repetition, the authentic, semiotics…

The Lid Collection
I collected hundreds of plastic lids from domestic containers, recast them in fine bone china, using traditional ceramic decoration and assembled them into a series of life-size dresses, creating a fragile but portable collection, which amounted to packaging for the body. There was also a series of matching handbags to accompany the collection.

Current Working Title: Out of the Woods
New work consists of a series of figures that have arisen out of my collection of outmoded ornaments and figurines. Again the figures are recast in whole and part, to create new objects that have a surreal quality. At first glance they seem like pretty ornaments, but look again to find a more sinister narrative.
