My work reflects my internal, spiritual response to the land and sea. I work a great deal with internal processes, particularly dreams and journeying, all of which informs the work I create.
My aim is to manifest visually the crack between the worlds, therefore much of my work represents the twilight, the hidden, the imagined. I believe imagination to be very important. I invite the observer to move in, to explore the image and see beyond the immediate. It is my intention to express and satisfy the yearning within us all to come home to spirit, to connect with what is lost, to remind us of what really matters. I am not interested in representing the physical manifestation of a place, only the spirit of place.
I am moved and uplifted by wild landscapes and ancient monuments, big skies and roaring seas, high mountains and wind-blown moors, here I lose my small sense of self and join with something bigger. This doesn’t scare me – quite the opposite. In the presence of nature I am reassured, reconnected, redeemed.
There is something in watercolour that is wild too. I love its unpredictability, it has a life of its own, it will flow, dry too quickly, pool and run dependent on factors beyond my control - which encourages me to surrender and allow some other energy to be present in the process. For me, watercolour is the medium of the dream – you never know where your dream will take you, you have to follow it anyway. I think the most courageous people are not those who tackle something external, but those who face internal demons, follow their hearts, love fiercely, sacrifice comfort and security for passion and wildness.
