Finola Delamere

I would describe myself as a ‘painterly potter’. I specialise in making and decorating ceramics in the maiolica-style. This is a decorative style that has its origins in rural Spain and seems appropriate to my environment and the influence it has on my work.

My inspiration for decorating my sculptural pieces –my ‘Standing Stones’ has come from not only the big skies we see here in Croxton Kerrial but also from the dramatic plants we have room to grow and the trees that surround us.

I throw on the potter’s wheel –I particularly like to make large pedestal bowls or birdbaths. I find my thrown ware suits decoration based on abstractions of plants. I handbuild my sculptural vessels using large slabs of clay and I like to decorate these with particular trees or landscape scenes that currently appeal to me.

I use red earthenware clay. After biscuit firing the work is covered in a white tin-glaze and then colour is applied by brush on to the raw glaze surface. The colour melts into the glaze surface on the final firing.

My work covers a price range from £5 for small thrown work to £250 for larger work made to commission.
