Austin predominantly works in stone, wood, cold-cast metal resins and ceramic based sculpture. He often uses carving techniques to release an envisioned form from a solid, inanimate raw material. He takes great joy from working with these materials, and often allows the nature of them to come through in his finished work. Whilst some of his work can be described as 'abstracted', or at the very least 'stylised', he invariably takes inspiration from organic forms, including the human form.
As well as loving the various sculpting processes, his practice keeps reaffirming his belief that imagination is indeed limitless - something we often forget in our adult lives.
As well as producing his sculpture, Austin offers a range of educational workshops and Adult Education workshops, working in a variety of mediums, and is also available for commission work.
He currently teaches on the Modular Certificate in Sculpture at Leicester University, Institute for Lifelong Learning at the Embrace Arts Centre, Leicester.
